List of Weaving yarn shops in Australia

Dear Weavers

This topic has been an issue for me for a while. Were you ever looking for a specific yarn for your next weaving project and had to go through all the online clatter to find what you were looking for? And after a while you got so fed up with it, that you just went for the one yarn shop that has it all? Yes, I probably don't do yarn searches as much, due to the fact that I have my own yarn business. But the situation does come up there so often, when I'm looking for something interesting, a wool yarn (BB Yarn Supply doesn't sell any 100% wool yarns) or a special yarn for the weaving correspondence course. Every time I have to go through the chunk and spam of online shops that come up. On the top we always have the ones which are supported by Google. What about all the other small businesses which are doing it tough and most likely have the much better deals anyway? So you scroll down through the whole list of shops, most of them appear multiple times until finally getting to the ones you are looking for. Are you sick of it like me?

Well, I finally had enough and took the time to create my own online weaving yarn shop list. And I'm so happy to be able to share it with you.

One thing though: Please, please support small businesses, especially online!!! Everybody is doing it tough at the moment. The market for weaving yarns in Australia is not as huge as it is in the USA or Europe. We have a lot of small shops spread all over the country. Each one has something unique/different what the other shop doesn't have. That is the only way we can all exist and survive. Larger companies who have everything available in one place make it so much harder for the small business owner to exist. So please, I'm begging you support the small businesses in your area. I'm sure they appreciate it and trust me I know how it feels.

Before I start typing the list, here are a few things to explain:

  • This list contains shops with weaving yarns only. There are hundreds of business with knitting yarns. Yes, as a weaver we can use knitting yarns for weaving. But if I would include all knitting yarn shops as well, then the list would end up to be huge. I had to stop somewhere. So there are a couple of knitting shops on the list, just a couple....
  • As weavers we like to use yarn on cones or spools. It is just so much easier to work with. Most shops on the list have at least one range of yarns in cones or spools. Or the shop offers to have the yarn wound into cones.
  • There are a fair bit of shops out there that have an Ashford franchise. I remember the times when we just had one or two places where you could get the Ashford products. Today it seems to be a lot of shops that have all the Ashford products on stock, including all the yarns.
  • The shops on the list all deal online. I am sure there are plenty of real shops out there, in your town or city. Again, I had to stop somewhere to make sure the list doesn't get too long.
  • At the end of each description of the yarns I also added where the shop is located. Maybe you live nearby and are able to visit in person?
  • Should I have forgotten an online shop, please let me know and I can add the business to the list. Send me an email with the details to sales@bbyarn.com or write it in a comment to this blog post.

Happy yarn search everyone!
